Understanding Contact Lenses

Contact lenses have evolved dramatically over the years, offering more comfort and visual clarity than ever before. These small, medical devices sit directly on your eye’s surface, providing natural vision correction while remaining virtually invisible to others.

Modern contact lenses are designed with various materials and technologies that allow your eyes to receive plenty of oxygen, reducing the risk of complications and ensuring long-term eye health.

FAQs

How much do contact lenses cost?

Contact lens prices depend on what type you need and how often you replace them. Specialty lenses like multifocals or sclerals cost more. Good news – insurance often helps with the cost.

We’ll go over all the pricing details during your visit so there are no surprises.

How to remove contact lenses?

  • Wash your hands well
  • Gently slide the lens down to the white part of your eye with your fingertip
  • Pinch the lens gently between your thumb and finger to remove it

Important: If it feels stuck, don’t force it – just add some rewetting drops and try again.

Do contact lenses expire?

Yes, they do! Unopened contacts usually expire 2-3 years after they’re made.

Once you open them, you need to follow the replacement schedule:

  • Daily
  • Every two weeks
  • Monthly

Using expired lenses is asking for trouble – you could get an eye infection or other problems.

How to put in contact lenses?

  • Start with clean hands
  • Put the lens on your fingertip
  • Make sure it’s not inside out (should look like a bowl, not have flared edges)
  • Hold your upper eyelid up with one hand
  • Pull your lower lid down with the other hand
  • Look straight ahead and gently place the lens on your eye
  • Blink slowly a few times to help it settle into place

Can you swim with contact lenses?

We don’t recommend it. Pool water, ocean water, and even tap water can carry nasty bugs that cause eye infections.

If you absolutely must swim with contacts:

  • Use daily disposables
  • Wear tight-fitting goggles
  • Throw the lenses away immediately after swimming

Are contact lenses with a larger diameter more comfortable?

Not necessarily! Comfort is all about the right fit, not the size.

Sure, scleral lenses are bigger and can be super comfortable for certain conditions, but the best diameter for you depends on your eye’s unique shape and needs.

That’s why proper fitting is so important.
